After setting aside the final layout of my book Insomnia: Hotel Noir, I did a final edit last night to ensure that the pairing and sequencing of the photographs was still what I wanted.

Best regards, Douglas

  1. Wow! Congratulations. I absolutely love this series of images, and I even shortly considered ordering a copy. Then I saw the price :)

Doug, I have recently got a proof copy of mine, “Urban Dreams II”, medium landscape on normal paper, and I was quite satisfied. Is the premium paper really worth this premium price? Sure, it may be better, but it’s really prohibitive.

On the other hand, as far as I see it, the whole POD business mostly circles around authors buying their own books, thus it may make sense to make it as beautiful and perfect as you can afford.

Actually, I’m quite sure I’ll never know, but it would definitely be interesting to see how many copies are sold of the winner of Blurb’s Photography.Book.Now competition, and how many of the first two runners up. I mean, they’ll probably get the best marketing that a POD book can get. How’s your estimate? Is POD mainly satisfying the vanity of us authors? Is it only a business for Blurb or can it be a business for authors as well? Is there anything like a mass market that is not completely satisfied by the traditional photobook publishers?

Anyway. I wish you all the best for the competition. You certainly deserve it. Btw: this title image! I haven’t seen it before and, omg, this is great in how it sums up the semi-dream state of waking through a night!

  2. Andreas, from my experience, I think that the premium paper really benefits color photographs the most. Nevertheless, I want to put my best foot forward for my PBN submission.

As to the books sales by the winners, I am not sure what those numbers are. I have seen Dow’s photographs exhibited a lot more after her win. And I am sure that there are now some traditional book publishers who would be interested in her next photobook project as a result.

I think that there are some growing options for photographers to further their career using POD. Similar to the evolution of inkjet printing, POD is still in its infancy and I think that we are going to eventually see some awesome products (POD printing) at some decent prices.
